In the autumn 1860, the then third largest building in Hradec Králové was inaugurated, the boys‘ ecclesiastical student college Boromeum. It was built from the means and collections of the Catholic Church. It was provided of in particular by the seventeenth bishop of the bishopric of Hradec Králové, Karel Boromejský Hanl, who was also the longest-serving primate at the local tribune. The palace, modern then in the late-classicist style, was built in 2 years by the famous designer of Hradec František Dobrkovský in place of 3 purchased and demolished houses. The construction then cost 63.721 guldens.

The house was used as a dormitory for more than 100 talented students. The dormitory was used for more than 40 years, there were almost 1,300 went through it, out of which one sixth continued to study theology, others philosophy, law, medicine.
